Who Was Chuck Barris And What Was His Six-Degrees Pittsburgh Connection?

Ask your parents. Or grandparents.

Chuck Barris, who died yesterday at age 87, was once the king of wacky game shows…The Dating Game

Which led to The Newlywed Game

The Family¬†GameThe Game Game (yes there WAS a Game Game)…and finally, THIS:

Which, if nothing else, showed America who to applaud…or blame – take your pick – for all the above (and many more) TV shows.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barris was hired by ABC to follow Dick Clark around during the 1960 Congressional Payola Hearings. His autobiography Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (in which he claimed to have once been a CIA assassin) became a hit movie starring Sam Rockwell and directed by George Clooney.

So the six-degrees Pittsburgh connection?

In 1962, Chuck Barris wrote what became one of the best-loved Rock & Roll hits of the early 60’s…”Palisades Park”.

You know where this is going if you’ve lived round here for long…
