Country superstar Luke Bryan is in Houston this week getting ready for Super Bowl LI this Sunday, between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. Luke will be singing the National Anthem before this year’s game.
During a press event today (Feb. 2), Luke was asked if he’s received any tips from pop star Lady Gaga, who performed the Anthem at last year’s game. “I think she did an amazing job last year.” he said. “Through this process, I’ve kind of gone back through the years and watched how people approached the Anthem and just tried to figure out in my mind how I wanted to approach it.”
“Last year, she put her stamp on it – which was amazing – and it’s a big moment for me and I’m excited to get out there and hopefully put my stamp on it.”
There’s speculation surrounding just how he’ll sing and how long his performance will be. While it’s fun to see and hear and talk about it with his friends, Luke said, “The interesting way that I’m going to do the Anthem is, I’m just gonna walk out there and sing it.”
“It’s not like I’ve got a band or an orchestra that’s on time and they play it the same way and I’m following them,” he continued. “I’m kinda gonna walk out there and follow my heart and follow the vibe of the room, so there’s no telling how long it may go.”
He joked, “I may get out there and go ‘I’m about to pass out, I need to get this thing over quick’ or I may get out there and really, really feel good in the moment and try to milk it a little bit.”
When it comes to who he wants to win the Super Bowl, Luke said, “I have to let it be known that in most years I can kind of be pretty neutral on who’s gonna win the Super Bowl and you’re always gonna get some flack from your fans. But, I grew up in Georgia, so I gotta pull for my Falcons, my Dirty Birds.”
Luke is the first male artist to perform the song at the Super Bowl since Billy Joel did it at Super Bowl XLI in 2007 at Dolphins Stadium in Florida.
