Merle Haggard’s Specialty Marijuana Strain Coming Soon

By Amanda Wicks

Willie Nelson isn’t the only country musician developing his own marijuana strains. Before he passed in April, Merle Haggard was working on releasing a connoisseur strain, which is finally set to premiere later this fall.

Haggard had been partnering with Colorado Weed Co. to develop his distinct smoke. His daughter Jenessa Haggard-Bennett and her husband Brian Bennett continued working with the company after his death.

During his life, Haggard grew medical grade marijuana on his California property with his son-in-law’s help. Jenessa credits the plant with helping her father over the last 20 years of his life, especially as he continued touring in his final years. She decided to name his specialty strand “Merle’s Girls” after a girl’s soccer team he sponsored in the state.

Colorado Weed Co’s Michael Smith, who worked with Haggard on the strain, said, “We’re starting out with what Merle liked to smoke. The sativas kept him going, kept him creative, kept him getting out there and being able to play. He did contribute a lot of his success on the road to sativas.”

A release date has not yet been set, but Merle’s Girls will be available first in Colorado and then in the medical field (via The Boot).
