Travis Tritt, Country Rock Pioneer

Before Brantley Gilbert. Before Eric Church. Before Jason Aldean…there was this:

What you’ll be seeing tonight onstage at the Miller Lite Kickoff and Rib Festival is one of the guys who made guys like Brantley, Eric and Aldean possible.

“Put Some Drive In Your Country” met with some resistance when released 25 years ago; some stations refused to play it at all.

But Y108 did, and found the Country fans of 1991 were ready for a song that invoked both Opry pioneer Roy Acuff and classic rocker Duane Allman, while laying down some new licks of its own.

Of course Tritt wasn’t the first to mix Country and Rock for a Country audience. Alabama, Waylon & Willie, Hank Jr. were among the ones who cleared the path for Travis Tritt.

In turn, the success of songs like “T-R-O-U-B-L-E”…

Helped pave the way for this…

Yes, this version is considerably toned down from the original, scorching, “Ain’t Goin’ Down” (‘Til The Sun Comes Up) from 1993. The original’s not on YouTube. Anyway…

Travis Tritt was signed to Warner Bros, on a “singles deal.” He’d record a song, WB would release it and if it took off, he got to do an album.

Here’s the single…

The 1980 Ford F-100 pickup in the video was Travis’ actual, personal ride, the one in which he moved to Nashville from Marietta, GA.

“Country Club” became popular enough that the singles deal quickly became a full-blown contract…and the Country Club album that followed made Travis Tritt a star.

Did I mention admission’s free tonight? Saddle Up opens at 7:30, Travis takes the stage at 9. Do NOT toss quarters!

Oh, look for the Donald Trump reference at 1:08 in the above video…LOL.
