Ally and Andy’s American Warrior this week is Army Sgt Jim Zamaris. He’s an Iraq veteran from Castle Shannon where he lives with his 4 year old son and 1 year old daughter.
Jim joined the Army back in 2005 and worked as an Ammunition Specialist for the 351st Ordnance Company. He was deployed 2008-2009 to Al Qayyarah Iraq.
“Coming home was a big adjustment and deployment changed how I live my life. You forget things don’t work the same and people around you move on so when you return you try to pick up where you left off but it doesn’t work. You and everyone else changed but you don’t get the chance to adjust gradually.”
When we asked Jim what it was like being over there, he said “They don’t have very much” there are not many buildings, trees or wildlife around over there.
Ally and Andy asked him what keeps you going here at home and he said “you have to find you motivation in life.” His fiancé is his driving reason.
Jim now works for AGH as an Assistant Account Parking manager. He said he’s engaged to the woman of his dreams and we will be merging their families together (she has 5 kids and he has 2).
“Having a big family is important to me and I am the happiest I have ever been. She has been instrumental in helping me focus and getting my life on track.”
If someone is thinking about getting into the service, Jim would “highly recommend it.” In an email, Jim said “I joined the Army to better my life and it has done that and it taught me a lot about life and what I can do. I will always encourage anyone thinking of joining the Armed Forces because I think you learn a lot and it teaches you life lessons you won’t get anywhere else. You gain brothers and sisters in arms and you learn what it’s like to be selfless. You put others and their well being in front of your own. I think everyone should have to serve so you can understand values like that.”
