Dolly Parton is about to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary. The country icon revealed during a recent press conference that when she wed Carl Thomas Dean in 1966, they did so in secret after a label executive at Monument records, where she had recently signed, asked her to wait a year to marry.
“I said ‘Okay,’” said Parton (quotes via Taste of Country). “That weekend, me and Carl went to Ringgold, Ga., and got married so it wouldn’t be in the Tennessee papers.”
To celebrate their golden anniversary, the couple is going to renew their vows. Their wedding only had her mother, a witness and a Baptist preacher and his wife in attendance, so the pair weren’t able to have the “big dress and party.” The singer, who is known for her fashion, says that won’t be the case the second time around.
“We’re gonna take a bunch of pictures,” Parton said. “I might even sell some to the rag mags and take the money and give it to the Imagination Library.”
The pair’s anniversary is in May.
