Kip Moore Tops The Charts Again With ‘Hey Pretty Girl’
Kip Moore’s poignant single “Hey Pretty Girl” lands at No. 1 this week on the Mediabase country singles chart. This marks Moore’s third consecutive No. 1, as “Hey Pretty Girl” follows his previous chart toppers of “Somethin’ Bout A Truck” and “Beer Money.”
All three songs are from Moore’s 2012 debut album Up All Night.
Up All Night was the best-selling debut album from any country artist released last year. It’s also the first country album released since 2008 to earn three back to back No. 1 songs. To understand why that last fact is impressive, note that Moore is only the third artist to achieve that since the chart’s inception.
Numbers aside, it’s Moore’s music that is the most impressive, and “Hey Pretty Girl” is no exception. Moore visited Radio.com recently and explained how the song came together.
“Hey Pretty Girl,” he explained, was written with one of his “dearest friends,” Dan Couch (the pair also cowrote “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck”). Moore came up with the concept for “Hey Pretty Girl” after his guitar player, Dave Lapsley, came to him when he learned his wife was pregnant.
“I met Dave right when I moved to town,” Moore recalled. “Dave and I used to really hit the town hard together. He was my wild running mate. Dave settled down and got married, and about three years ago Dave’s wife told him she was pregnant. I didn’t have a record deal yet, and he was still trying to grind it out with me. He came to me and was like, ‘My wife’s pregnant, and I’ve got a kid on the way, and we need to make this thing happen now.'”
Moore explained how there was a whole new dimension to his friend.
“All of a sudden Dave was really serious about providing for this family,” Kip continued. “‘If something doesn’t happen soon I’m going to have to quit playing and go and get a steady job.’ That struck me pretty hard because Dave was my brother. So, I went in and was talking about it with Dan. Even though I don’t have a wife and kids, it just made me really think about that.”
He further explained that he wanted to get across what he hopes to feel and have one day.
