Randy Travis was hospitalized in Dallas yesterday (July 7), where he remains. A statement from his representatives reports that the 54-year-old country star is “suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy” and listed in critical condition by the unspecified hospital.
Cardiomyopathy is the deterioration of the heart muscle, that can lead to heart failure. When contracted virally, it can have a quick onset.
In an unrelated light, Travis has faced several legal issues over the past year, including his DWI charge in Dallas in January 2013 from a previous arrest and a charge of public drunkenness in February 2012.
More recently, he released a new single last month, “Tonight I’m Playing Possum.” Recorded with Joe Nichols, it’s a tribute to his friend, the late George Jones.
