He will still tour for two more years but today George Strait said after that, “no more”. He’s not retiring just getting off, as they say in country music, “that damn ol’ road.”
Reminds me of a story. Ya’ know George Strait never takes his success for granted. This story may prove it.
About ten years ago, George invited me to see one of his big Nokia/Chevy shows in Tempe Arizona. I watched from the rear of the stage with Erv Woolsey who is the guy who has managed George Strait for his entire career. Yeah, they go way back.
Well the show was brilliant and George’s set was absolutely the best and the audience was clamoring for autographs and handshakes as the band played “The Cowboy Rides Away.” I’ve seen a ton of George shows but never saw one better.
After the fan worship, George came down the stairs and walked by Erv and I, stopped, nodded to me, turned to Erv and said, “How’d I do?”
Erv said, “Ya’ did good George.”
George smiled and walked to his trailer to change.
Not believing what I just saw I looked at Erv and said, “Really? He wants to know how he did?”
Erv just smiled and said, “Every night, Stoney. Every show.”
